Start
your tour with a drive through the residental area of Martinique's
capitol, Fort de France, to see the colonial mansions as well as the
Sacred Heart Basilica. Your next stop will be a visit to the lovely Le
Jardin de Balata (Balata Gardens), a man-made botanical garden located
along the Trace Road. Staying on this road, you will pass through
Martinique's lush rain forest.
Continuing on, you will stop at St. Pierre, the town that was destroyed in
1902 by a volcanic eruption. Visit the ruins, including the former
theater.
A stop at the Neisson rum distillery, a small, family-run operation, will
give an idea of how these delicious spirits are produced.
Returning along the Coastal road, you will pass through Carbet, where,
according to tradition, Christopher Columbus landed in 1502. Drive through
the fishing village of Bellefontaine as well as the developing towns of
Casse-Pilote and Schoelcher.
